DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel - West End

26th July 2015

On the 27th June I visited the DoubleTree hotel to have dinner at Restaurant 92 with my boyfriend for his birthday. I had found the deal on Groupon (I use Groupon a lot for good deals that you will see) for a three course meal with a glass of house wine for two (the glass of wine we later swapped for a glass of champagne).

The doubletree hotel is located on 92 Southampton Row, London WC1B 4BH. I was actually staying at the Hilton London Metropole Hotel (225 Edgware Road, London, W2 1JU) so it was an easy commute by underground to get to other hotel.

I will just be focussing on the food that I had in the restaurant and not the hotel itself as I don't believe I truely experienced it enough to be able to give an honest opinion on it. However as you can see from the pictures that I posted from their website, it is a beautiful building and well decorated. The restaurant (which was called Restaurant 92) was located on the right hand side of the reception as you walk inside.

Starters

There wasn't a large range to choose from as it was a set menu due to the Groupon deal, and because of all the excitement I forgot to take a picture. However, I chose to have the soup of the day which was Spicy roasted Parsnip and Carrot soup (suitable for vegetarins).

The soup was lovely and creamy and very filling, it was served in large deep bowl and a slice of bread. It was well seasoned and the temperature was perfect.

Mains

For my main course I had Grilled chicken with mash potato and green beans, I was very happy with my choice. When in doubt I always go for the chicken choice on the menu and it didn't disappoint. The chicken was kept up into small segments which made it easier to eat, it was succulent and well seasoned and coated it went tasted like a sweet gravy and it went will with the mash on the side. You would think that they would have something extravagant as a side but it wasn't necessary. The mash was seasoned with green herbs and had no lumps! WAHEY! The vegetables were nice too, can't really complain about those really - cooked to the right texture so no soggyness.

Dessert

For my dessert I had the Vanilla and orange cheesecake with DoubleTree cookie base, now this had the potential to be a really nice dessert but it didn't help that I was already full from the starter and the main. I was a bit dubious at first to try this as I wasn't sure how vanilla and orange were going to work together. The initial taste was nice but after a while it left a sour aftertaste in your mouth. I also didn't like the texture of it, most cheesecakes I have tried have been thick and creamy so that is what I am used to, however this was light and fluffy like a mousse so it didn't quite work with the crumble base. The cheesecake to cookie base ratio wasn't good either, the cheesecake part was too thick and there wasn't enough cookie base to help compliment it. The potential of this dessert was definitely there, unfortunately it just didn't work for me and my taste buds. As they say one mans trash is another mans treasure (I think that's how it goes..).

My boyfriend opted for something different and decided to have the Lemon tart with forest fruits, this was also another one that had such great potential to be a really nice dessert but I wasn't keen on it. It was just too sour, and I guess you could say that was expected as it's made from lemons however I felt that it could have been tastier if it was sweeter, but that may be my sweet tooth talking. It did come with a forest fruit compote on the side which I guess could have been used to conteract the sourness but there wasn't enough there for the size of the dessert.

Overall

The presentation of the food from the starter right through to the dessert was beautiful. The layout was neatly presented and made the food look delicious. The staff were friendly, they weren't around much so it took a while to ask for drink request and the bill etc. It wasn't a busy night either so I couldn't even use that as an excuse but when we did see/speak to them they were friendly and accomodating and I would definitly come here again if I come across another Groupon deal haha.

Enjoy!
